RCA Voyager 3 Tablet Review
Hey there, so today I am reviewing the RCA Voyager 3 tablet. I have been wanting this tablet for a while now and finally got one.
This is one of those Black Friday tablets that Walmart always has for about $25 (regular price is $48) and is always one of the first items to fly off the shelf. Now they have these in different colors, and even offer a version that comes with a keyboard and case. I couldn't find that one, so got this instead. Now if you are looking for a good little tablet with an updated OS and budget friendly then this is the guy for you.
At the time of this posting, it has Android 7.1 Nougat installed on it. Next year they may allow for the tablet to upgrade to 8.0 Oreo or even the new 9.0 Apple Pie. Most tablets that I have seen on the market still have the sluggish and now every outdated 4.4 Kitkat or 5.0 Lollipop. So I was really excited to see that this tablet had 7.0 and was under $50.
The Pros:
It also has 4 core processor, 16gb storage, HD 1024x600 (not really true HD but better than a stick in the eye.) Dual Cameras and a 6hr battery life. Also it also Bluetooth and Wifi compatible. It comes with its own proprietary AC charger, but also allows for a micro usb charge as well. So I was really happy to see the dual charging capabilities.
The Cons:
Even though it has the 2 cameras, they are cheap and not worth a damn. They are seriously pixelated like pre 2008 webcams. The front facing camera is the "best" and I use that in a very very loose meaning. The back of the tablet is very cheap feeling, and could easily break if dropped or handled to hard. But for under $50 its not "that bad". Also I found that the battery life wasn't 6hrs, it seemed like it started to die after about 2.5hrs of constant use. This might be different if you set the backlight on the display to be a bit darker. And this has a bunch of bloatware that you can not get rid of. And there is a volume up and down button on the launch ribbon that I wasn't able to get rid of. One of the major issues with the bloatware was that you couldn't delete the user manule out of the app folder. The preloaded RCA software you could remove.
Now because I picked this up as a gift I didn't want to take the protective film off the screen. So with that film on, it seemed that the touch response was a little laggy, but with it off it might be a lot better. Also the initial startup of the device took about 4 minutes to boot. And you have to have the activation code in order to use this tablet. Without it you are shit out of luck. There are YouTube videos showing how to "hack" it and get past that startup code thing but really its just best to make a copy of the receipt and call it good.
The screen rotation on this tab is super sensitive, so I recommend disabling it. I also like the fact that all of the buttons are on top. I was able to install Hulu, Netflix, HBO Go, Facebook, Messenger, and a few other programs that were "demanding" and it seemed to keep up with them just fine. It has a few preset ringtones that you can select from. But I would recommend downloading the Zedge app. Its free and allows you to download all types of ringtones, apps, and backgrounds. I also used a Wifi calling app on it and it worked well for that.
Over all this is going to be a great tablet for a kid or an elderly person who is new to technology, or if you just want to have a sub $50 tablet. There is a huge part of me that doesnt want to give this tablet away as a gift, but hey my birthday is right around the corner. Also you can get cases for this guy on eBay for under $30. I found one that had a Bluetooth keyboard for $13 with free shipping. Just look for 7' tablet cases with bluetooth keyboards and you should find one that will be suited for you and your needs. Same with screen protectors, just search 7' tablet screen protectors and you can get them typically for under $5. There may even be a bundled package where you can get the case and screen protector for one lump sum.
I am very disappointed in the Voyager 3. Compared to the first two RCA tablets this one is a real piece of junk. Dont waste your money guys. Look for an older RCA tablet on Ebay. You will be by far more satisfied. In conclusion. RCA Voyager 3 isn't worth the plastic used to build it.
